Passive intervention systems - the HYDRA

HYDR is a cost-effective and eco-friendly riverine litter skimmer that uses modular booms and natural river currents to collect floating waste without relying on machinery or causing environmental harm.

Removal of the floating waste easily and automatically? Is not a dream anymore, Plastic Cup has developed a passive system that only uses the flow of the river to divert and collect waste. The HYDRA skimmer is a modular systems that capture floating waste using natural flow conditions. The HYDRA devices have been tested in two modes: dry mode (fixed to the shore) and wet mode (mounted on waste collection vessels). The advantage of passive systems is their beauty: they require no fuel, have minimal maintenance and almost zero running costs. The fundamental components of HYDRA are rigid, semi-submerged booms that can be easily interconnected as needed which create a series of whirlpools on the downstream side of the boom. The suction force generated by the series of whirlpools diverts floating riverine litter particles towards the collection zone for retrieving.

The AQPLA supported the initial development of the technology.

The DALIA Danube Lighthouse Horizon project with grant agreement ID:101094070 supported the further development and application of the technology towards commercialization
