International community river cleanups

The Plastic Cup race is an international, community-driven river cleanup that combines trash-boat races, cultural programs, and hands-on action to tackle plastic pollution across borders.

Rivers and plastic pollution do not know boundaries, so neither we do. Though, to cleanup a longer river section, especially with border crossing, one need multiple days on water. This is where Plastic Cup started - how to manage to cleanup a long river section and make people enjoy it? The Plastic Cup race is innovative, community-driven model for tackling plastic pollution in inland waters, which are critical pathways to marine environments. This trash-boat races combine citizen engagement, awareness-raising, and hands-on cleanup activities along our international rivers in the Danube Region. The race attracts international experts and locals to join this multi-challenging river experience. Next to the paramount community cleanup activity, river literacy is highly involved in the programme with cultural visits, environmental quizes and motivational speeches about sustainability and river protection. These are international by two means: attracting experts around the world that can bring home the message and also crossing borders to cleanup the whole river not considering borders! You can check out the map about the Plastic Cup races of previous years!
