Surveys

Drawing on our experience and network, we surveyed the impact of plastic pollution on hydropower plants in 8 Danube countries—95% reported negative effects, with cleanup costs reaching up to €110,000 annually; we are ready to collaborate with stakeholders to develop targeted solutions.

Based on our years of experiences, onsite knowledge and network, we are keen to survey the impacts on plastic pollution of rivers on different stakeholder groups and thematic fields. Recently, we have targetted hydropower plants to understand the impact of plastic pollution on their operation. In total, 23 water engineering structures, including more than a dozen hydropower plants across 8 Danube countries, participated in a comprehensive survey on plastic pollution impacts. 95% of the plants reported negative effects caused by floating plastic and waste, with more than half of them experiences occasional but substantial accumulations. For some plants, plastic pollution and its management is a permament issue! The cleanup requires significant effort and can cost up to EUR 110, 000 annually for a hydropower plant. Common removal tools include booms, trash racks, boats, and cranes. We are ready to work with other stakeholders to understand better the impact of plastic pollution and develop tailored and targetted solutions!
