Riversaver School Network

The Riversaver School Network, launched by Plastic Cup Society, connects schools across the Tisza River countries to educate children aged 6–14 about rivers, pollution, and recycling through multilingual resources and hands-on tools, fostering a new generation of environmentally conscious river protectors.

Rivers are in danger. Pollution and the effects of climate change are presenting us with increasing challenges. That’s why Plastic Cup Society launched the Riversaver School Network — with the primary goal of having schools in every Tisza River country where children learn to love, respect, and understand rivers. After all, those who know and love the river will also protect it. The network is supported by educational materials (the volumes of the Riversavers' handbook) and teaching aids — including a River Literacy Toolkit and a mobile Plastic Workshop — for children aged 6 to 14, in all Tisza languages and in English. The goal is to transfer and adapt knowledge related to rivers, water pollution, plastic use, and recycling.

Riversaver Schools have already been established in Ukraine, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, and Serbia. The program connects educational institutions into a network, opening new horizons in river protection and plastic reuse through river adoption, cleanup actions, and innovative plastic repurposing. Participating students and teachers learn about the economic, ecological, and cultural roles of rivers, the origins and behavior of riverine and marine plastic waste, and effective solutions developed to address these environmental problems. The program raises awareness of the interconnections between rivers, oceans, and global environmental issues. In line with relevant EU and UN guidelines, it significantly enhances participants’ river and plastic literacy.
